There are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, you must locate a clean work surface to perform the procedure. Lay out all the tools you'll need. Then, locate the battery's hatch, and then open it with the flathead, a coin, or other similar tool. Next, carefully pry out the battery by lifting the side closest to the key-ring hook. Make sure that you use rubber gloves to avoid damaging the contacts or the clips.

Insert the new battery into the socket once the old one is removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is placed in all the clips. Slide the cover downwards towards the key-ring portion until it becomes loose, and is able to slide off. Then, you can remove the cover to reveal the key blade inside. You can use it to unlock your car from the driver's seat If you've lost or broken the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles come with keyfobs which do more than just unlock and secure the doors. They can also be used to perform functions like summoning and auto parking the vehicle. The latest Volvo XC60 is capable of remotely starting your engine using its key fob buttons. How exactly does it work?

Find a clean surface on where you can put all the items needed for this project. Then, lay the fob down on the surface with its Volvo logo facing upward. Next utilize a flathead screwdriver or coin or similar tool to turn the battery hatch back to the open position. Be careful not to touch the electronic contact surfaces of the fob with your tools, since this could cause the fob's key to stop working properly.

When the hatch is opened you can slide the battery into its socket and ensure it is seated correctly with the positive (+) side facing upwards. Once the clips are fixed replace the battery cover and reassemble the fob.

Pressing the unlock button once will turn off the alarm and unlock the driver's side door. When you press it a second time, you can unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be beneficial for rolling down the windows to let in cool, fresh air during a hot summer day. If you're looking for more features, the key fob may also be used to activate ERS, which will start the vehicle's climate control system and then warm or cool it to your preferred temperature settings when the vehicle is parked.

How do I change the battery?

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle like it used to and it's possible that it's time to replace the battery. The battery can be replaced by using a flathead screwdriver pry bar made of plastic, or other small tools. Locate the small slot that houses the backup or emergency ignition key made of steel. Insert the blade of a screwdriver or a prybar tool into this slot and gently pry the rear of the fob. Once the fob has been opened, locate the CR2032 3V battery and take it off. Note: Some older Volvo models use different types of batteries which is the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have 7 tenths of a millimeter less than a CR2032 which means you'll need to be extra careful when replacing your battery.

When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel the transponder chip scans the code and compares it to the one that is stored in the start inhibitor module of your car. If the codes do not coincide, your vehicle will not start. This is a crucial security measure to prevent your Volvo from starting if the wrong key is used.

If you lose your key then you'll need to take it to a dealer to get it replaced and your car reset. This process can last up to 10 working days and will cost a significant amount of money. You can save money by programming your own computer. You can find all the necessary information in your owner's manual or on the internet. Take off the logo and non-logo covers and place your key fob on an uncluttered surface. Find the gray button on the upper right-hand corner of the fob and press it down. This will let the cover open to reveal the CR 2032 3V battery.
